EXPLORNG HISTORY

Field Plow-Penn Center-St. Helena, S.C.

Happy Monday.

Yes, I know blogs go up on Sunday and Wednesdays, but I went on a mini (small) vacation this week end. I went to Hilton Head, Beauford; and St. Helena, South Carolina.

I went to exlpore African American History in these counties in South Carolina. There is a place called The Penn Center. This is the site for the first school for freed slaves. There is a building called Gantt Cottage where Martin Luther King and other civil rights workers held meetings. They meet to discuss fairness for all people especially for African Americans. There are lots of oak trees with spanish moss hanging from them. I got some of the moss to stuff inside of mini pillows for my dolls. It is soft like cotton.

I ate at a place called, "The Gullah Grub". They had a drink called
"Swamp Water" (sweet tea and lemonade). I tried shark meat. It taste pretty good.

The resturant serves food that the people in this area eats, like collard greens, shrimp and grits with fish gravey, chopped bar 'b' que and cornbread with strawberriies for dessert. I was pretty stuffed and happy to get home after a exciting two days.

Oh! by the way "Gullah or Geechee" is the name they call the culture and people living in the LOW-COUNTRY on The Southern Coast of the South in the United States. Many of the African slaves were brought here to work on plantations.

Wow! there is a lot to learn about history in the United States. So lets continue this journey as we contiune to share on this blog.

NATURES FUNNY MOMENTS

Animals do the funniest things.

This week Ms. Mona, family members, friends and co-workers (people you work with ) and I, spotted animals doing some funny things.

A family member tried to pull out of a parking spot and attempted to

cross the street, but couldn't because nine (9) geese were standing in the middle of the street. She had to wait for them to decide to move.

Ms. Mona saw a rabbit hopping around in a neighbors yard around 12 oclock mid-night. One day at work a teacher where Ms. Mona works brought her dog to school. One of the students was playing catch with the dog. The dog was jumping over desk to get the ball.

A little boy I met at a mini health fair said that it would easy to take care of fish in one of those pretend fish tanks. We both agreed that you don't have to clean the fish tank, take it for a walk or remember to feed it. We kids say and do funny things too.

GO WITH THE FLOW

Did you ever make up a game?
Yesterday, I and Ms. Mona was standing near her car talking to a parent. Two little boys were running and stoppped to look at their reflection on the side of the car. They just stood there looking at themselves and then suddenly they ben to laugh. The laughter lead them to making funny faces and doing silly movements.
They even added sounds to the movements.

My friend and I looked around at what they were doing and we began to laugh too. They made up a game just looking at their reflection. Making up things with no real purpose is another one of those "JUST BECAUSE" moments that happens in our lives.

Sooo! just go with the floow like water and have fun. "U" never know what will happen next. That's what my friend Micah does. I'll tell you more about her later. She helps me to remember to do this when things aren't going smoothly.

JUST BECAUSE

Have you ever recieved a present, a hug or smile from someone and you didn't know why.

I call it a "JUST BECAUSE". A "JUST BECAUSE" is really a surprise, because you must have behaved in a way that made that person feel special enough to give you something unexpectedly (surprise).

Yesterday I got two "JUST BECAUSE" hugs from two people I never got hugs from before. Today I got some special vegetables I really wanted from someone who reads my blog. Ta Da!!!
"JUST BECASUE" happens all of the time.
They are sometimes small and sometimes big. They come in different shapes and colors. The may happen at your house, they may happen on a field trip with your class. So become a "JUST BECAUSE" detective (pay attention) and be ready to feel really GREAT! and of course SURPRISED!!!

CELEBRATE YOUR HERITAGE

I, Sunrae get to learn more about my ancestors, my culture and my country this month.

I even learn about my friends heritage too.

Today begins BLACK HISTORY MONTH celebrations. This is a special time of the year when African Americans focus on their past and present history, and share with non-African Americans about there history in America.

art by Leroy Campbell
This is a time of both pride and pain. There were times African Americans were not treated in a kind way. They were made slaves, were not allowed to read or write, use public rest rooms, ride in the front of a public bus or sit in theatres that they were perfoming at.

Times were difficult (hard) but many African Americans rose ( had dreams) above their difficulties to gave America and themelves a lot to be proud of . They created many functional (useful) inventions that we use today. They created the clothes dryer, traffic light, cellular phone, lawn mower, bathroom tissue holder, keyboard stand and the ironing board.

This is a very small list of inventions. I will tell you more inventions thoughout the month. You, your friends and your family can find more by checking out the following web site: www.inventions.about.com/library/blblackinventions

It is important to learn about your hiistory/heritage (culture) so that you can understand why your family practice certain rituals, like prayers, dances at festivals ,eat special foods or celebrate special holidays. Knowing about your history/heritage helps you feel proud about yourself and helps you get along with others.

GUESS WHAT?

Did you know that Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton was trying to make a cure for headaches. He mixed together a bunch of ingredients and don't ask, because we don't know. He ended up with the soft drink COKE. The recipe is still a closely guarded secret. It only took eight years of being sold in a drug store before the drink was popular enough to be sold in bottles.
