Sunrae at MY Black Is Beautiful Expo

Ms. Mona, her daughter & I went to the My Black Is Beautiful Expo this week-end. It was a week-end of manicures, music and makeup. Ms. Mona really enjoyed the music spun (played) by MC Lite (top female rapper) on the turn table. They call it spinnig music on the ones and twos (that's DJ language). She played some old school and new school rap music. People danced in their seats. Some people got up and danced around their seats too.  Ms. Mona & her daughter took pictures in front of the LARGE signs that had MY BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL written on them. This Expo travels around to large cities encouraging young girls and women to accept themselves and have fun putting makeup, getting their hair done and taking care of their health. So, I want everyone to remember to eat right, exercise, drink plenty of water; dress for your size, shape, style and personality. Most of all have FUN doing it.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
I am beautiful in my skin. I accept who I am everyday through and through. I am the best me I can be.

CREATIVE ACTIVITY

Lip Gloss

MATERIALS
Vegetable shortening,
honey
unsweetened drink mix (eg. Kool-Aid),
hot water
bowl
spoon

Options: (solid canola oil or coconut oil)

   1. Use a small bowl to mix 1 tbsp of the solid vegetable(canola oil or coconut) shortening and 1 tsp of honey.  In a separate bowl, mix the drink mix and 1/4 tsp of hot water until it is   dissolved.
Stir in as much of the drink mix as possible. The actual amount will depend on the temperature of water. The more you can dissolve, the stronger the flavour will be.
   2. You can choose the color and flavor of you lip gloss by the type of drink mix you use.
   3. Add one drop of the water mixture to the shortening/honey base.  Stir well.  Repeat until you get the color/flavor combination you want.  Pour into a clean container or old lip gloss pot.
   4. Store in the refrigerator.
Keeps for 3 days, but it tastes so good that you will use it up very fast!

RING SHOUT

Hello everyone. It has been a busy winter and SPRING IS HERE
Soon school will be over and HOT FUN IN THE SUMMER TIME will be here too.

Well, GUESS WHAT
Ms. Mona and I was asked to be a storyteller at a brand new bookstore located in Union City, GA. Yes, we went and had lots of fun. Ms Mona read a book called Dancing The Ring Shout!, by Kim L. Siegelson .

The book is about a traditional african harvest celebration. Everyone attending the celebration must bring some kind of instrument to the celebration to use while they are dancing.  The main character searches for something to bring. Up until the day of the celebration he thinks he has nothing, but he discovers he has something on his body. He realizes his hands can be used as a musical instruments. Have you ever thought you had nothing to offer to help others?
Just remember your hands are always available to give a hand shake, pick up something or wave hello.

Ms. Mona with the yellow scarf.

Ms. Mona had the children and their parents dance the ring shout. She gave them musical instruments and scarves to use while they danced. They all shouted HOORAY!!!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
"Today I will remember that I alway have something to give, even if I don't know what it is right away."

CREATIVE ACTIVITY

Glue cereal box top to seal in beans or rice.
Decorate box with construction paper and stickers.
Cover tops of vegetable or soup can with colorful contact paper.
Paint a design on tree limb, these are your drum sticks.

Let every thing dry for one day.
Get your friends to make the drums with you.

Then have your own ring shout dance.
Make a circle and dance the ring shout.
Don't forget to shout HOORAY!

GUESS WHAT?
Djembe

A djembe (pronounced /ˈdʒɛmbeɪ/ JEM-bay) also known as djimbe, jenbe, jymbe, jembe, yembe, or jimbay, or sanbanyi in Susu; is a skin-covered hand drum shaped like a large goblet and meant to be played with bare hands.

According to the Bamana people in Mali, the name of the djembe comes directly from the saying "Anke dje, anke be" which literally translates to "everyone gather together" and defines the drum's purpose. In the Bamanakan language, "Dje" is the verb for "gather" and "be" translates as "everyone".

SNOW FLAKES EVERY WHERE

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW

This winter has brought a lot of snow. It's cold but lots of fun. I saw a lot of snow men today as I road with Ms. Mona in the car on my way to a tea room for tea tasting. There was a snow man that had on a red hat and scarf. There was one that had stick arms and something funny stuck in the middle of its face for a nose. Did it snow where you live? Did you get out side to play and make a snow man? If you did please draw a picture of it and send it to me. If you didn't draw one and send it anyway. Send picture to Ms. Mona's e-mail address-serenityhac3@gmail.com. She will post it on this blog. I will be happy to tell my friends about your drawing.

THOUGHT
FOR T ODAY

QUESS WHAT?

Snowflakes and snow crystals are made of ice, and pretty much nothing more. A snow crystal, as the name implies, is a single crystal of ice.
A snowflake is a more general term; it can mean an individual snow crystal, or a few snow crystals stuck together.

Snowflakes
are not frozen raindrops. Sometimes raindrops do freeze as they fall, but this is called sleet. Sleet particles don't have any of the elaborate and symme
trical patterning found in snow crystals. Snow crystals form when water vapor condenses directly into ice, which happens in the clouds. The patterns emerge as the crystals grow.
