February is Heart Month

Valentine Day is the day we show our extra special love for our family and friends. How do you show your love for others? I will tell you how I show it. I make special cards and with the help of Ms. Mona, we sometimes make craft projects like mini pillows with red fabric that has hearts on it. We sometimes make special food treats like strawberries dipped in chocolate. Yummie! On this years (2011)Valentines Day Ms. Mona will teach some fifth grades girls how to make strawberry smoothies and chocolate dipped fruit at an after school program. We might even dip potatoe chips and pretzel sticks.The girls like their group to be called "Pink Monday Girls" because they get together on Mondays.

SNOW-FUN-SNOW

Could you believe that it snowed last week in 49 of the 50 states?Even Hawaii. WOW! Did you have fun playing in the snow?
Ms. Mona, her daughter and I slid down an icey hill on a float made for the pool. Whoopie! we had BIG FUN. It was really cold though. We looked like walking snow ladies, because we were buddled up in hat, coat, scarf, boots, socks, tights, sweaters, t-shirts, sweat pants and off course gloves. You could only see our eyes. Ha! Ha!
When we got home we had some hot tea and eat homemade popcorn. We popped popcorn kernels in a pot. Ms. Mona put too many kernels in the pot and popcorn popped every where. We ate a whole lot of pop corn that night. We did have some left over for the next day.
I hope you had some fun in the snow.

NEW BEGINNINGS

It's a new year and Ms. Mona and Sunrae have been very busy. Ms. Mona has been writting a new book that shares what an affirmation is. (positive words made to your self to create positive things to happen in your life with love) So makae sure you check back in a few days to see the cover of the new book. You will get to meet Sunrae's friend Micah.

Well here it is. It is called My Uncle's Big Heart, by Angela Farris Watkins, Ph.D Ms. Mona & I have read this book. It is wonderful.

Sunrae at MY Black Is Beautiful Expo

Ms. Mona, her daughter & I went to the My Black Is Beautiful Expo this week-end. It was a week-end of manicures, music and makeup. Ms. Mona really enjoyed the music spun (played) by MC Lite (top female rapper) on the turn table. They call it spinnig music on the ones and twos (that's DJ language). She played some old school and new school rap music. People danced in their seats. Some people got up and danced around their seats too.  Ms. Mona & her daughter took pictures in front of the LARGE signs that had MY BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL written on them. This Expo travels around to large cities encouraging young girls and women to accept themselves and have fun putting makeup, getting their hair done and taking care of their health. So, I want everyone to remember to eat right, exercise, drink plenty of water; dress for your size, shape, style and personality. Most of all have FUN doing it.

CREATIVE ACTIVITY

Lip Gloss

            

MATERIALS 

Vegetable shortening,

honey 

unsweetened drink mix (eg. Kool-Aid), 

hot water

bowl

spoon

Options: (solid canola oil or coconut oil)

   1. Use a small bowl to mix 1 tbsp of the solid vegetable(canola oil or coconut) shortening and 1 tsp of honey.  In a separate bowl, mix the drink mix and 1/4 tsp of hot water until it is   dissolved. 

 Stir in as much of the drink mix as possible. The actual amount will depend on the temperature of water. The more you can dissolve, the stronger the flavour will be.

   2. You can choose the color and flavor of you lip gloss by the type of drink mix you use. 

   3. Add one drop of the water mixture to the shortening/honey base.  Stir well.  Repeat until you get the color/flavor combination you want.  Pour into a clean container or old lip gloss pot.

   4. Store in the refrigerator.  

Keeps for 3 days, but it tastes so good that you will use it up very fast!
